Ronald L. Kaplan

January 8, 1944 - June 18, 2020

Ronald Kaplan passed away peacefully on June 18th with his loving family by his side, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Syracuse, New York on January 8, 1944 to Asher and Sallie Kaplan. He attended Nottingham High School, Onondaga Community College, and Plattsburgh State College. On December 4, 1971 he married his best friend Cheryl Maclaughlin.

Ron taught history at Strough Jr. High for 34½ years, and Rome Catholic High School for another 12 years after his retirement.

Ron had a passion for delicious food, loved teaching, traveling to places he taught about, spending summers with his Beber Camp family, coaching, refereeing, and Syracuse basketball. But most of all he loved his family. He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl; daughters Kimberly (Eric) Bird, Amy (Stephen) Cavallaro, Ashley (Ross) Marullo; his 6 grandchildren Madison and Emily Bird, Cassidy, Carlye, and Chloe Cavallaro, and Ryan Marullo; his sisters Shari Whiting and Cindy (Jeff) Bennes-Breloff; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, brother and sister-in-law Barry (Cookie) Kaplan, niece Sarah Whiting, and brother-in-law Fred Bennes.

Ron always said: “I had a great life” and “Go SU!”
