Peter Gary Hutchins,
62, of Damariscotta, passed away peacefully on
March 16, 2015 at Cove’s Edge with his
daughter Jessica and caregiver Michelle by his
side, after a long battle with Cerebellar
Ataxia.
Peter, commonly known as “Pete”, was born on
May 26, 1952 in Oneida, NY, to parents Joan
(Maley) Hutchins and John Hutchins. He grew up
in the Lake Delta area of Rome, NY and
graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1970.
Peter received his A.A. from Mohawk Valley
Community College in 1974, his B.S. in Urban
Studies from Utica College in 1976, and his
J.D. from Syracuse University in 1978. He
spent several years working in California for
both Kaiser Steel and Coca Cola Corporation as
a labor relations attorney. He then moved back
to Sylvan Beach, New York, and worked as an
Oneida County Public Defender until his
retirement, when he moved to Maine to be
closer to family.
Peter was an avid reader, known to read
several books at the same time. Churchill was
his favorite read. He enjoyed good food and
wine, spirited conversations, and daily walks.
He loved to visit art museums, especially when
he visited Maine each summer. He also enjoyed
photography and history. Peter loved to be by
the water, and frequented beaches in New York
and Maine. Peter will be remembered for his
intelligence, sense of humor, and
thoughtfulness. He had a competitive spirit,
and was a tenacious worker. He will be missed
dearly by his friends and family.
He is survived by his daughter, Jessica
Hutchins, and fiance Nathan Hilton, of
Damariscotta, ME; sister, Sandy Hutchins of
Riverside, CA; and brothers, David and Michael
Hutchins of CA; as well as members of his
extended family and friends. He was
predeceased by his parents.
A service will be held at 1:00pm, on Saturday,
May 16, 2015 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral
Home, in Damariscotta. In lieu of flowers,
memorial gifts may be made to either the HMS
NeuroDiscovery Opportunity Fund, at Harvard
Medical School, Attention: Gift Processing,
Office of Resource Development, 401 Park
Drive, Suite 22 West, Boston, MA 02215; or the
Portland Museum of Art, 7 Congress Square,
Portland, Maine 04101.
