Ernest R. Stockwell

Ernest
R. Stockwell, 98, formerly of Rome, died
October 6, 2021, at the Masonic Care
Community in Utica, where he had resided
since 2004. He was born October 16, 1922
in Hartford, Vermont the son of Cecil
and Grace Hazen Stockwell. He graduated
from Hartford High School, in White
River Jct., Vermont and received his
Bachelors and Masters in Secondary
Mathematics from the University of
Vermont in Burlington. Ernest served in
WWII in the US Army, American Theater,
as a 1st Lt. from 1943 to 1946. On
September, 15, 1946 he married Christine
R. Hughes in Brattleboro, Vermont. She
died February 26, 2017. He was a
mathematics teacher at Rome Free Academy
from 1957 to 1984 and served as Chairman
of Secondary Mathematics from 1962 to
1982.
Ernest was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church, Rome, serving as
Elder and Trustee. He was a member of
the Senior Choir from 1957 to 2004. He
was a member of NEA, NYSTA, Rome
Teacher’s Association, NYS Mathematics
Teachers, Senior Men’s Gold League, and
the Senior Citizens Bowling League.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr.
Cynthia R. Stockwell, Eugene, OR; a son
and daughter in-law, Alan E. and
Kathleen G. Stockwell, Newport News, VA;
and two grandsons, Brian E. Stockwell
(Chanel) and Derrick A. Stockwell. He
was predeceased by a sister and
brother-in-law, Marjorie E. and Roy E.
Campbell and a brother and
sister-in-law, Robert S. and Wilma
Stockwell.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m.
Thursday at the First Presbyterian
Church, 108 W. Court St., Rome.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to
the First Presbyterian Church or a
charity of one’s choice. Arrangements
have been entrusted to Prince-Boyd &
Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 W.
Court St., Rome.

Mr. Stockwell was an outstanding
math teacher. He taught the
advanced math class in 12th grade,
introduced us to calculus, probably had
something to do with getting us that IBM
360 with Mr Pierson so we could learn
Fortran. He was also a very kind
gentleman. Because of the math
program at RFA, I sailed through my
calculus classes at Purdue, and didn’t
need a programming class till my 2nd MS
degree. RFA, aside from all the
fun we had there, it was one heck of a
