Beloved
father and grandfather Charles J. Heck, 90,
passed away peacefully Wednesday July 25,
2018 at his home, surrounded by his loving
family. He was born July 4, 1928 in Oneonta,
NY, the son of Charles J. and Eva Oliver
Heck. Before proudly serving his country in
the military, Charlie worked as a fireman on
the D&H Railroad.Charlie proudly served
in the US Naval Air from 1951-1959. He was
an aircraft mechanic aboard the WASP and the
Boxer aircraft carriers during the Korean
conflict. Upon his return home, he completed
his education and graduated from Oneonta
State Teachers College. On November 10, 1951
he married his college sweetheart, Betty Mae
Davis at Center Moriches Methodist Church on
Long Island. A dedicated and much loved
educator, Charlie taught social studies and
reading at Strough Jr. High School for 28
years, retiring in 1984.Throughout his
career he continued to study and earn
several Masters degrees. Charlie was a
founding member and Pipe Sargent of the 78”
Frasers Highlanders Bagpipe Band. He
researched, designed and helped create the
band uniforms and taught many new recruits
to play the bagpipes.He was also a member of
the NYS Retired Teachers Association and the
Rome VFW, and active as a historian and
genealogist. His kind and generous spirit
will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years,
Betty; his daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy
and Peter Cania and Heidi and Lee Elmendorf;
a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and
Alison Heck; his sisters, Mildred Babcock
and Lillian Olsen; beloved grandchildren
Mari, Peter, Trevor, Nastia, McLaren, and
Charlie. He was predeceased by his sister
Josephine Mongillo and two brothers, Robert
Heck and Wayne Heck.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday
at Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for
Funerals, Inc. 210 W. Court St. Rome.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the Home
for Funerals Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
